CREATING A PICKLEBALL BRAND

Pickleball is a relatively new sport to the UK however in recent times the sport has seen a huge increase in players and interest fuelled by the exposure coming from the game in the US where over 9 million people play the sport!

Given that sport, fitness and leisure are our focus we decide at KYAK that we wanted to bring the sport to our local town of Newark-on-Trent so we set about building a club where adults of all ages, genders and ability could play. Of course we couldn’t do that without building a brand for it and so Newark Pickleball was born.

We currently have around 60 players registered to play with enquiries and new members joining each week! The club’s founding ethos is one of inclusivity and fun where the social aspect of playing this sport is the priority.

DEVELOPING THE IDENTITY

Since Pickleball was new to us we researched the game by joining a session at Lincoln Pickleball club. This gave us a feel for sport as well as the people that play and some of the unique aspects such as the paddle bats and the plastic balls!

We wanted the social aspect to be the fundamental backbone of the club, and to create an environment where fun was at the heart without losing the competitiveness. However first we needed to develop a logo that represented some of these aspects.

The Newark Pickleball logo developed by taking references such as the unique shape of the paddle bats used and the plastic balls that are predominantly yellow. The N of Newark became the paddle head together with a handle, and when shown as a symbol it sits within a yellow circle.

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

We opted for a colour palette that included the yellow of the balls used to play Pickleball, together with a denim blue that added some style. The aim is not too appear elitist but to encourage new enquiries and to represent the people that currently play.

Using photos of actual pickleball players from the club, we developed a website that’s informative about the game, provides details of where, when and how to play and even includes a bit of history of how the game developed. Take a look at newarkpickleball.co.uk to see it for yourself…

Further detail developed for the website includes graphics showing the location of the club as well as information regarding the unique aspects of the Pickleball court.

The website will continue to be updated as the club grows but for now we’ve provided current members and prospective new ones with all the initial information they need to get started, as well as a sense of belonging to an exciting and vibrant club.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Of course we couldn’t leave things at just producing a website, we’ve also developed Facebook and Instagram social media pages where the content will be much more reactive. Here’s the Newark Pickleball Instagram page and the brand in action.

MARKETING

Promoting the club and encouraging potential new members to get in touch is critical to ensuring there’s a constant pool of players signing up for each session.

We’ve used a number of initiatives to reach out to the local community and beyond, such as producing and distributing postcards to having posters appear in retail units and even in the council newsletter.

MERCHANDISE

We have also produced club paddles with our manufacturing partners in China. Using the same technology as some of the world’s top paddles we can now give our players the chance to play with high quality equipment while at the same time promoting our brand.

Another brand extension has been to produce individually personalised t-shirts for our players. Using moisture wicking material the t-shirts provide a sense of togetherness when playing at our weekly club nights and especially at competitions, plus of course they help to spread the message of our pickleball club.
